Native Vote Washington Spokane Community Trainee

Position Summary   

Native Vote Washington is seeking two ​Community Trainees to support ​Native Vote Washington’s organizing and civic engagement activities through voter outreach and education in Spokane, WA. This is a great position for someone who is interested in building their skills around Tribal Sovereignty, environmental activism and advocacy, statewide political races, and learning about elections from the inside. Community Trainees engage in community and voter outreach, plus advocacy efforts that support the Native Vote Washington (NVW) campaign. Our Community Trainees must be independently motivated, conscientious problem solvers and eager to roll up their sleeves and connect with people. They will gain skills in how to listen to the concerns facing a community, develop trust with voters, track responses and data, as well as learn how ​Native outreach ​organizations work. This position will be specifically focused on community engagement opportunities ​with Native peoples ​in Spokane, WA.

About Our Organization 

Native Vote Washington is a 100% Indigenous-led collaborative, serving Indigenous communities across the state of Washington. The Native Vote Advisory Committee provides guidance to the development and implementation of this indigenous-led political power building project in Washington and serves as the decision-making body for the project. In 2021, Washington Conservation Action became the fiscal sponsor of Native Vote and Native Vote WA Education Fund to increase the capacity of the organization to operate year-round​.​ 

Washington Conservation Action is a statewide environmental advocacy organization that advances environmental policies and pushes for actions that equitably address climate pollution, restore Puget Sound, sustain our state’s forests, and protect our democracy. For Washington to remain a national leader on environmental issues, we need environmental champions in elected office and to hold our leaders accountable. To keep our environment protected, healthy, and vibrant, we are committed to supporting Native candidates, candidates of color, and environmental leaders seeking election. 

Internship Description: 

Hours/Timeframe/Stipend:    

The Spokane Community Trainee​s​ will work 10 hours per week starting the week of ​May 6th​ through ​mid-June​. Trainees will work remotely and at in-person events​. They should have availability to work on May 25-26th at the Expo ‘74 50th Celebration Powwow at The Falls.​​ ​Trainees will join ​1-2​​ ​meetings per week via phone or video, including a weekly check​-​in with their supervisor. Trainees should be available for occasional evening shifts. Schedule is flexible and may vary weekly based on our field opportunities. A​ ​$​950​​ ​stipend will be provided. We offer a $100 wellness benefit and reimbursement for any work-related travel. We will provide work-from-home technology such as a laptop, headset, etc. if needed. ​ 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Recruit and mobilize community members to ​sign up for our email list ​and take action with the NVW 

  • Represent NVW at events as needed 

  • Conduct civic engagement activities including​ ​voter ​registration and ​education 

  • ​​Enter, ​​​maintain and organize data in various databases  

  • Engage volunteers through community outreach and social media 

  • Capture natural moments and candid photographs throughout the event 

  • Other tasks to support NVW’s field activities  

Qualifications  

  • Previous election work is not required. Candidates should have: 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in person, by phone, and over video conference  

  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team 

  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines 

  • Enjoys talking on the phone and in-person, can shrug off cold responses easily while maintaining a professional and considerate demeanor 

  • Positive attitude and has fun while working efficiently 

  • Discretion and integrity to work with and maintain confidentiality of sensitive personal information 

  • ​​Interest in protecting Tribal Sovereignty and ​​a ​passion for racial justice, voting rights, politics, or social change  

Desirable Skills 

  • Familiar with Washington state Tribes 

  • Experience with social media and other digital platforms
